As a part of a collaboration between Mattel and the Iovine and Young Academy, I was tasked to appeal to the older kid (8+) who craves innovative, challenging, mixed-play experiences and social currency by developing experiences that use the capabilities of tech/digital platforms and seamlessly integrate observable behaviors.

8-13 year olds have an inherent need to grow creatively, but it's difficult for Hot Wheels to provide that outlet and retain their attention for long periods of time. Introducing Creative Suite: a video creation app for kids to unleash their creativity.

To drive users and retention, we designed a content creation plan for partnerships with creators. By leveraging creators influence, Mattel could create challenges with video reviews on Youtube where a lot of young kids spend their time. The kids would then create their own videos for the challenges creating a positive feedback loop between the two platforms.

When creating this concept, there was a very new player in the video space that was just starting to gain traction - TikTok. At the time it had just transitioned from Musical.ly and the user base was still fairly young and small, still being dwarfed by larger players like Snapchat. Recognizing this trend we sought to replicate their early success in a gamified way, but ultimately Mattel decided to not move forward with the concept.
